The 7 Best Lunch Spots in Sunset Park

Camp David’s neighborhood of Sunset Park is known for its harbor views and historical significance, but it’s especially celebrated for the variety of cuisines found scattered throughout the treelined streets. We asked our friend and cheap eats expert, Ben Kopelman, for a rundown of the extra special lunch spots our beloved community has to offer.  Get out and start exploring.

TACOS EL BRONCO

A taco truck that will make you think you died and woke up in LA. There is a brick and mortar location nearby if you feel like being fancy and using a chair, but there’s really no need. Cheap, delicious, and likely the answer anytime you’re not sure what you’re in the mood for. They are on the smaller side, so no shame in ordering 4 or 5 (or 12) if you’re hungry.

YUN NAN FLAVOUR GARDEN

You’re going to fall in love with a big bowl of flavorful, chewy noodles. That’s all you really need to know going in. Whether you get them cold (topped with sauces and ground pork) or hot (in soup with different cuts of beef), the homemade Yunnan rice noodles cure all. Good luck finding a better version anywhere else.

RICOS TACOS

Al pastor and spicy pork tacos at Ricos are reason enough to visit but the menu delivers on full plate entrees as well. The bistec encebollado — heaps of sliced steak and soft, sweet grilled onions — is ideal when you’re in the mood for a bigger meal (and a less productive afternoon).

BA XUYÊN

A small spot on 8th Avenue, Ba Xuyen has one of the best banh mi in all of New York. The bread is fresh and flaky, the pâté is full of flavor, and the price makes it perfect for a grab-and-go, mid-day meal. They also have avocado milkshakes. Don’t ask, just get.

PACIFICANA

Plates of shumai and pork buns zip around the dining room of this legendary dim sum spot. A mainstay in the area, lines are the norm on weekends, but weekday lunch is more manageable. Grab whatever looks good, but a bowl of clams (order from your waiter if none wheel by) and a plate of chicken feet should be on your table.

THANH DA

Another favorite for banh mi. The House Special does the trick with the thick sliced BBQ pork shining through. One of the better banh mi options on a stretch full of options.

VIIZA

Viiza does a good job separating the world into two groups. There are those that get turned on by the idea of pizza cones and non-alcoholic drinks served in light bulbs, and those who don’t. For the former … welcome to Xanadu.
